There are several ways to get your business started. I think one good way would be to go to every apartment complex in town and leave a stack of cards in the rental offices. You could probably even strike deals with the landlords where you would move their tenants and in turn they could advertise "Free Moving Help" or some such thing. Working apartment complexes alone could probably keep you very busy. Another way to get moving jobs is to keep an eye on uShip. uShip is a website which connects people who need stuff hauled with people who are willing to do it. In many parts of the country you could make a very nice living with uShip referrals alone. I've noticed that a lot of uShip users complain about movers who flake out on them so a dependable person could probably do very well for himself there. One problem you need to think about is that of damaged items. I've seen plenty of ads where the mover states flat out that they are not responsible for damages but I don't know whether or not such a statement can really hold up, especially if the mover is grossly negligent somehow. Realistically I think if you are doing small jobs and the client is right there helping you the risk that you'll break something is small but it is a risk you must deal with nonetheless. Depending on where you are you may or may not need a license to be a mover so be sure to check with a lawyer before you do anything. I doubt that anyone will care if you help a guy move for $100 but who knows, we live in a crazy world nowadays. |
